History of the Publishing house

The Utilitas Mathematica Publishing house began in the early 1970s. There was a need for a Canadian entity to promote and facilitate the publication of research in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics, so UMPI was born.

Organization of UMPI

UMPI is a registered non-profit corporation.

Functionally, Utilitas Mathematica Publishing Inc. is run by an Editorial Board, headed by an Editor-in-chief and Managing Editors, who work closely with their editorial members to monitor the production and distribution of its research publications. Information about Editorial Board members is published in Utilitas Mathematica and Congressus Numerantium.

Activities of UMPI

The most visible activity of UMPI is the publication of its two journals, Utilitas Mathematica and Congressus Numerantium. These journals were at the leading edge of the pack of new journals that appeared in the 1970s and 1980s, and although many of their siblings disappeared over the year, these two journals have lived on and are very popular.

For over 25 years, UMPI ran the well-attended Winnipeg Mathematics Conference at the University of Manitoba in Canada every autumn. At the same time, it sponsored several colloquia and seminars promoting research in Mathematics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics.

Internationally, UMPI has long supported the Southeastern International Conference on Combinatorics, Graph Theory, and Computing. Congressus Numerantium was formed to publish the Proceedings of this conference and its predecessor the Louisiana Conference on Combinatorics, Graph Theory, and Computing. These two popular conferences became known jointly as the Southeastern Conference, the largest conference of its kind, alternating venues between Baton Rouge and Boca Raton (always in the warm South during Spring Break, so conference facilities can be available).

Utilitas Mathematica

Volume I of Utilitas Mathematica appeared in May, 1972.  It was a big hit, and has been very popular for many years with reaserchers in Combinatorics, Coding Theory, Statistics, Graph Theory, and Combinatorial Mathematics in general. Special volumes have appeard in the series from time to time, honoring well-known researchers in Mathematics for their many years of dedication.

Utilitas Mathematica ships in March, June and November.

Submitted articles are refereed and approved for publication in a professional manner. Instructions and formatting criteria are available from the Math Journals office and in Utilitas Mathematica.

Congressus Numerantium

Volume I of Congressus Numerantium appeared in 1970.  Since its beginning, this journal has been used almost exclusively for the publication of the Proceedings of the Southeastern conferences mentioned above. It now runs one issue per year, in 5 volumes.

Congressus Numerantium is shipped in late January (after the holiday backlog).

All articles are refereed and approved for publication in a professional manner. Instructions and formatting guidelines are available from the Math Journals office and in Congressus Numerantium.

Congressus Numerantium periodically publishes special volumes.
Examples of these are:
  - Volumes 114, 115 - Surveys in Graph Theory, edited by Gary Chartrand and Mike Jacobson.
  - Volume 129 - Triangle Centers and Central Triangles, by Clark Kimberling.
  - Volume 194 - Proceedings of the Eleventh International Conference on Fibonacci Numbers and their Applications.

Note:
We intend to compile and publish a list of all articles that have appeared
in Utilitas Mathematica and Congressus Numerantium online as
soon as personnel can put it together.  It may take a while.
